DESIGN BRIEF
This project required us to create a visual guide with clear and engaging instructions within six steps, formatted as an accordion-style brochure. My guide teaches the user how to do a break dancing move called a "6-Step." There are already plenty of visual guides that teach this move, so I wanted to find a way to make my own guide unique and interesting.
SOLUTION
Because the guide is in a sequential order and broken up into individual panels, I thought that it would be fitting to also tell a story. Each panel would have the primary function of teaching the "6-Step" while the secondary function would advance a simple storyline. I chose to personify the legs of the break dancer and tell a love story between them.

FIRST DRAFT
I used a minimalist approach for the overall design aesthetic. This first draft contained a few problems. First, the borders only looked good when the design was a single panel, so it didn't work as a six step brochure. Secondly, the storytelling elements felt like they blended in too well with the  teaching elements. I wanted to make it clear that these were meant to be on the same page, but function separately.

EDITING
I decided to make all of the story elements look as if they were drawn on top of the brochure. This separates it from the teaching aspects because of the stark contrast between vector art and hand sketched art. Also, the borders were removed to strengthen the cohesiveness of the panels as a whole.
color coding
The colored circles and lines were added to make it clear to the user which body part moves where.
